Meet our Members

Althea Wray

On my first visit to WCB Toastmasters I found a very welcoming environment and I was unusually comfortable sitting in a room full of strangers. Although I had some experience with public speaking prior to joining the club I was still very uncomfortable and uncertain whenever I had to do it. Since joining the club my confidence in my ability to speak in front of a group of people has improved significantly. WCB Toastmasters club is a place where I can set goals and take definite steps to achieve them. If I make mistakes I have a supportive group ready to offer helpful advice and encourage me to keep going.

Lorraine W.C. Cheng, CC

President

Joining WCB Toastmaster Club is the best investment of time and money I ever made. I have been a member of the Club since 2006. WCB is where you can learn public speaking as well as leadership skills in an non-judgemental environment. Members learn by helping each other during the meetings.
2014-2015 is the third time I have been elected president of the club. I have the privilege to work with a group of enthusiastic board members.

A quote from Mark Twain "Supposing is good, but finding out is better.

Aymara Toro Young

Secretary

I'm originally from Venezuela. When I came to Canada about 4 years ago, the first thing I did was join WCB Toastmasters to help improve my English. The club provides a friendly and welcoming environment that helps members develop into great speakers and leaders. Thanks to Toastmasters and the club I have gained confidence and leadership skills that I can easily transfer to my everyday life. As a volunteer in many different organizations, the skills I have honed through the program have empowered me to make a difference in my community and take on new challenges. Toastmasters is a life changing experience, so why don't start now?

Tong Liu

VP of Education

I came to Canada as an international student from China 13 years ago. I found it difficult expressing myself in English when I started my first job in 2007. I was afraid of voicing my opinion in meetings or with my co-workers. Over the past 4 years, Toastmasters not only helped me becoming a better communicator but also improving my leadership skills. Toastmasters provided a safe and supportive environment for me to challenge myself and reach my full potential. I firmly believe effective communication is the key to success in life.

Omayra Toro Young

VP or Membership

Hi! I'm Omayra Toro Young. I have been in WCB Toastmasters for almost 4 years now and I love it. What I enjoy the most about it is the judgement free and friendly environment. There is a sense of family that makes you feel welcomed right away.

I am hoping to improve my comfort level when addressing an audience which I feel will benefit my personal development along with my career goals. I also look forward to contributing to the club and offering help where I can. I really look forward to the club meetings!

Yves Massicotte

Sergeant at Arms

I have been working in the media for over 25 years, all this time trying to avoid speaking in public. Ever since joining WCB Toastmasters 18 months ago, I found myself enjoying more and more speaking in front of the group and being more confident. I love coming to WCB Toastmasters every week; we learn while sharing some good laugh.

Madina Rod

Tresureer

I always knew my communication skills needed a desperate help, but had no idea what Toastmaster was until a coworker/friend asked me to go with her to a meeting. Now I am grateful to my friend for introducing me to WCB toastmaster club. Not only am I getting to work on betterment of my communication skills but also acquiring leadership skills. I no longer hide at the back of the room when attending a meeting, but look forward to get a chance to be in the front. This change was only thanks to toastmaster and now I go to everymeeting with excitement, ready to improve myself.

Chung Leung

VP of Public Relations

As a creative, I am always faced by situations where I need to present my ideas to small or large groups. I was never comfortable speaking in front of people or even have one on one conversation, but Toastmasters has given me the confidence to do those and even more. At WCB Toastmasters is where I gained my communication, presentational, leadership and impromptu speaking skills. This experience has changed my life and will continue to do so now that I am taking the position of VP of Public Relations.

I am a 27 year-old sports fanatic, foody, and traveller living and working in downtown Toronto.  I work in the Sports & Entertainment industry as an Account Manager.  I've been a sports nut from a young age playing hockey in the winter and golf in the summer, so it was only natural that I continue my love for sports and make a career out of it.  I thoroughly enjoy cooking and trying new types of food.  In addition to cooking, I like to eat out at many of the delicious restaurants Toronto has to offer.  My favourite food is Italian.  I've decided my next trip will be to Italy so I can enjoy my favourite food and immerse myself in the Italian culture.

I joined Toastmasters in November 2014.  I wanted to improve my presentation/speaking skills, and at the same time overcome my fear of public speaking.  Every member of our club is welcoming, kind, supportive and very encouraging.  We are lucky to have such a diverse group of people with varying demographics.

At the start, I thought WCB would help me erase my French accent; that did not really happen! But I learned so much in storytelling, crafting well structured presentations, improvising short impromptu speeches, leading meetings, mentoring new comers and simply gaining self-confidence, that I never left. I also continually make new friends at WCB, people of all ages and from allover the world.

I'm a teacher in training and joined WCB Toastmasters in October 2014 after a few visits. The club members are genuinely kind and supportive and the meetings are good fun. I strongly encourage anyone who is toying with the idea of visiting to be brave and take that step. The only way to kill the public speaking monster is to face it head on!
